We Are Ouoia
The making.
Essencia / essence /ˈɛsəns/ ouoia
The word essence comes from the Latin essentia, which itself derives from the Greek word (ouoia) ancient Greek philosophy, ouoia referred to the fundamental nature or substance of something, its "being" or "what it truly is."
The essence of something is its basic and most important characteristic which gives it its individual identity.
I started creating concrete candles out of a simple desire to merge my love for raw, industrial materials with the warmth and ambiance that candles bring. Concrete has always fascinated me because of its strength, its versatility, and its ability to tell a story through its imperfections. I wanted to create something unique that not only served as a functional object but also as a piece of art. The idea of blending the rawness of concrete with the soft glow of a candle felt like the perfect way to contrast two very different elements and create something truly one-of-a-kind.
At first, I was driven by the artistry of crafting these candles, but as I made more and more, I began to see how concrete could be used in other ways to bring character and warmth into a home. My vision will be expanded beyond just candles to include other pieces that would complement and enhance home decor in a way that felt both modern and timeless. I realized that concrete, with its unique texture and durable nature, could be used to create everything from planters to vases, and trays, making each piece carrying the same handcrafted, individualized spirit that makes our candles so special.
Our brand is built on the belief that home decor should reflect personality and craftsmanship, and that’s exactly what we aim to offer. As we expand into home decor, our focus will remain on creating pieces that are functional yet artistic, designed to add a personal touch to any space. Each item will carry the same attention to detail and dedication to the craft that went into our concrete candles, ensuring that no matter the product, it tells a story of individuality, creativity, and the beauty found in imperfection.
Creating a concrete candle begins with shaping the form in a custom-designed mold. Once the concrete is poured, it needs several days to cure and harden. During this time, the artist inspects the piece for imperfections, which are embraced as part of its uniqueness. These subtle variations like cracks, texture differences, and air bubbles add to the candle holder’s character and beauty.
After curing, the surface is carefully sanded and polished, and a sealant is applied to prepare it for the candle. Concrete, known for its strength and versatility, becomes a perfect medium for candles that are not only functional but also visually striking. Every concrete candle is hand-poured and shaped, making each one a one-of-a-kind work of art.
This process reflects patience, craftsmanship, and the beauty of imperfection. Each candle is a testament to individuality, a lasting piece where no two are ever the same.
